Happy New Year!! I hope this week has been a good one thus far. Mine? Well thanks for asking, mine has been an absolute mess and thanks to that I’ve been having non-stop anxiety attacks. Now, a little bit of fear here and there is okay but when it becomes overwhelming, persistent and happens to almost take control of your life then it‘s graduated to a problem! And for me, it‘s become a problem. To be very honest, I’m really quick to disregard issues/symptoms sometimes. The Nigerian in me will almost overlook it and say it‘ll heal or go away over time. But er... here we are today!

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, "an anxiety disorder causes unexpected or unhelpful anxiety that seriously impacts our lives, including how we think, feel and act." So basically, feeling anxious here and there is normal especially because we all get worried sometimes; feeling anxious is also helpful when it warns us of danger. But when that feeling becomes constant, unexpected and overwhelming, then it‘s a disorder/problem. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, it affects about 40million adults 18yrs and older; 18% of the population and in Canada affects 10.1% of the population 15yrs and older. Now that‘s something!

What causes anxiety you may ask? We sometimes get anxiety due to a traumatic life event such as war, death, medical conditions such as anemia, thyroid problem, caffeine or alcohol. Some people try to avoid dealing with it and others try to deal with it and end up on medication. I‘m in the category of people that avoided it but is now forced to deal with it. How am I trying to deal with it?

Yoga and some

I’m sharing a few poses I’ve learnt to come force myself into when I’m starting to feel very anxious. And the great thing is, you don‘t need a mat, yoga clothes, too much space etc. All you need is your body and your breath.

Child‘s pose/Balasana

Tree pose/Vrikasana

Standing forward bend/ Uttanasana

Headstand/ Salamba Sirsasana

Legs up the wall/ Viparita Karani

If we are being realistic and honest, sometimes I’d be feeling very anxious in a very public place. At that moment I’m unable to just come into a yoga pose so I start by consciously breathing. Slowing the breath down and if I can, I excuse myself and find a corner where I can easily come into a standing forward fold.

This is a work in progress. If you suffer from anxiety and have tips on how you deal, please feel free to share. I‘ll be happy to try them out.
